The superstar 21-year-old begins the fourth and final season of Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s Never Have I Ever.
Never have I ever graduated from high school! It’s hard to imagine the hotheaded Devi Vishwakumar of Never Have I Ever’s Season 1 headed off to college, away from her mom, grandma, and cousin, yet the fourth and final season brings Devi’s antics in Sherman Oaks to a close. “For such a smart kid, she makes a lot of dumb decisions, many of which are very real and relatable,” actor Maitreyi Ramakrishnan says of her character. “The overarching lessons she’s learned throughout the series are to love yourself and be thankful for the things in your life that make you who you are.”
Twenty-one-year-old Ramakrishnan has also learned and accomplished much since she beat out the 15,000 other candidates that responded to an open casting call for the role of Devi on Twitter. Since the show first aired in 2020, the Tamil Canadian actor has been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, included on TIME Magazine’s Time100 Next 2021 List, and landed multiple voice acting roles. “The biggest way my life has changed is that I’ve found what I love the most, which is acting,” Ramakrishnan says. “I have never in my life felt as happy as I do waking up at four in the morning to be able to work for crazy long days that I never get tired of.”
Season 3 closed with a few cliffhangers that left fans eager to learn where Devi was heading. With the final season, Ramakrishnan is pleased with the way creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher have wrapped up her character’s story: “Everything comes together really nicely and it’s a true end to Devi’s journey. Well, at least this part of her journey. She doesn’t die or anything in the end.”
