In filmmaker Sydney Freeland’s new coming-of-age drama Rez Ball, high school basketball unites a New Mexico town, where the members of the local team, the Chuska Warriors, are hometown heroes deeply rooted in their Native American heritage. Led by star player Nataanii
Jackson and his best friend Jimmy Holiday, played by newcomers Kusem Goodwind and
Kauchani Bratt, the squad appears primed for a competitive year thanks in part to their coach
(Jessica Matten), a former women’s basketball star, and their one rule: “Win championships.”
When Nataanii’s tragic death shatters the team’s spirit and possibly its future, the Warriors must overcome loss, grief, and self-doubt to fight for the win they’ve been dreaming of.
Inspired by New York Times columnist Michael Powell’s book about New Mexico’s Chinle High School basketball team, Canyon Dreams: A Basketball Season on the Navajo Nation, Freeland (Echo) co-wrote the Rez Ball screenplay with Sterlin Harjo. The duo previously collaborated on the acclaimed comedy Reservation Dogs, about Native American teens growing up in Oklahoma.
Produced by LeBron James’s SpringHill Company, Rez Ball also stars Devin Sampson Craig, River Rayne Thomas, and Jojo Jackson, creating a truly exciting, fresh lineup.
