Netflix stars answer Queue’s questions about creativity and craft.
You’d never expect that Théodore Pellerin, who brilliantly portrays intimidating loner Ollie Larsson in the new teen slasher, There’s Someone Inside Your House, finds scary movies, well, too scary. The Quebecois actor best known for his award-winning performance in 2018’s Family First (Chien de garde) plays a convincingly suspicious teen, marked from the start of this cornfield-laden, small town-set horror film. Pellerin’s character loves a good stare and knows a lot more than he should about his fellow high school seniors. But as with most teens, there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to Ollie. Pellerin discusses his latest role, his start in acting, and his love of the There’s Someone Inside Your House cast.
Queue: What film and TV show made you fall in love with acting?
Théodore Pellerin: There are a lot of Quebecois films and shows that made me fall in love with acting. I think Xavier Dolan’s films, which I watched when I was younger, made me fall in love with movies and acting in general.
What was your first experience filming a movie?
TP: My first movie experience was a Quebecois film by André Turpin called Endorphine. It was a very dreamlike kind of a thriller about memory and time, and it was really interesting. I had a really good time doing it.
What do you remember about the first time you saw yourself on camera?
TP: Oh God, the first time I saw myself on camera, it was intense. It was in front of a lot of people. I was just sort of covering my eyes and waiting for it to end.
When did you first become involved in There’s Someone Inside Your House?
TP: I first became involved in There’s Someone Inside Your House a long time ago. I mean, we shot the film like two years ago. I think I became involved maybe just three months before shooting, so two years and three months.
Was there any specific inspiration you turned to as you prepared for your character?
TP: There was the book the film is based on — that was obviously such a great resource to have.
What was it like working with the cast of There’s Someone Inside Your House?
TP: Working with the cast was actually one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. We had such a good time. At first, I was a bit nervous because I’m slightly socially awkward, but they were all so welcoming and inviting and funny. We had a great time really.
Was there one scene that was challenging or memorable from the filming process?
TP: Towards the end of the film, there’s a scene with a lot of pyrotechnics. It was a real action moment, and it was pretty intense and intimidating.
What’s one word you would use to describe your character?
TP: One word I would use to describe Ollie is wounded, I think.
Did you take a keepsake from set?
TP: Well, okay. I did keep something from the set, and I think the entire cast did too. Asjha and Sydney made up sweaters with “F this house” written on them because it was a whole inside joke with Patrick, the director. Yeah, so that’s the thing that I kept. It was really funny.
What is your favorite scary movie?
TP: I’m too scared for scary movies — I can’t handle them. I would say Hereditary or Midsommar.
Last thing you’ve binged on Netflix?
TP: The last thing I binged on Netflix was Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us.
What is your passion outside of acting?
TP: My passion outside of acting is eating. Yeah, I just love to eat.
What food and drink would you pair with watching There’s Someone Inside Your House?
TP: I would pair popcorn and drink ginger ale to watch There’s Someone Inside Your House. Ginger ale, that’s my thing.
What is your dream role or project?
TP: Honestly, my dream project is just working with people who love what they do, are devoted to work, and are nice people, not assholes. That’s always nice.
