In filmmaker Azazel Jacobs’s His Three  Daughters, which premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, three estranged sisters reunite in their father’s cramped New York City apartment as his health begins to falter under palliative care.

The trio could not be more different, and the occasion prompts them to learn about each other and the separate lives they’ve lived: Katie (Carrie Coon) is the tightly wound eldest sister; the most-likely-stoned Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) has been saddled with caring for their dad without any help; and the anxious Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) thinks of herself as the rock of the family, even though she’s tried to keep the biggest distance from them. Despite their clashing personalities and varying recollections of their own childhoods, the three must come together in their father’s final days and make sense of the life he’s leaving behind.

Jacobs (French Exit, The Lovers) directs, writes, edits, and produces His Three Daughters, rendering a portrait of unending grief and love that examines the good, the bad, and the ugly that reside within every familial relationship with equal parts intensity and humor.
