Spellbound unites an inimitable roster of animation and musical legends to imagine a new, more honest kind of family movie. Directed by Vicky Jenson (Shrek), the film finds Princess Ellian (West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler) on the eve of her 15th birthday with her hands full: Her king (Javier Bardem) and queen (Nicole Kidman) parents have been turned into monsters. To avoid having to take up the throne in her parents’ absence, Ellian sets out on a daring adventure to lift their curse only to realize that like her transformed parents, their family dynamic might have evolved, too.

“If we start with the kingdom, a princess, a king, a queen, and a spell, we can use that to express the story of this family in a way that initially is just so familiar,” says Jenson of the film’s fairy-tale foundation. “[Ultimately] it is a story about being a human. It’s just that we haven’t seen it explored [from this perspective before].”

John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, and Tituss Burgess round out the impressive cast, helping to tell this powerful tale with nuance, humor, and flair.
