Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Zoe Saldaña star in the genre-defying Cannes hit Emilia Pérez, a daring film by Jacques Audiard.
In Emilia Pérez, a powerful cartel leader named Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) seeks out the services of Rita (Zoe Saldaña), an undervalued criminal defense lawyer, to help fake her own death in order to leave behind her deadly drug empire and wife Jessi (Selena Gomez) for the promise of life as her authentic self. A tale of ultimate redemption and what it means to fight for a purpose, the Spanish-language Emilia Pérez was awarded the Jury Prize at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
For French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, the writer-director known for films like the Academy Award-nominated A Prophet and his Silver Lion-winning Western The Sisters Brothers, his new musical crime drama is a longtime vision realized. He first considered creating an opera almost two decades before he started working on what would become the audacious fever dream that is Emilia Pérez, where song and movement tell as much of the story as the genre-defying script.
To anchor his Spanish-language film, Audiard brings together three triple-threat performers, whose characters form an unconventional family bonded by a desire for more. Gascón (Rebelde) electrifies as the titular Emilia, whose hopes for change connect the women. Saldaña (Avatar) plays Rita as she navigates a world of corruption and chaos. As Jessi, Gomez (Only Murders in the Building) is searching for freedom and identity outside of being a cartel boss’s wife.
Their incendiary work onscreen has already captivated audiences and critics, as the trio, together with their co-star Adriana Paz, took home the award for Best Actress at Cannes. The film, which also stars Édgar Ramírez, arrives in select theaters this fall and on Netflix November 13.
